Rachel Weisz, last seen on the London stage in her award-winning performance as Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Donmar Warehouse, is lining up a theatrical return in a new production of David Hare’s Plenty.

According to reports in London’s Daily Mail, she has agreed to star in a production that will be directed by David Leveaux (Broadway revivals of Nine and the most recent Fiddler on the Roof, plus the plays A Moon for the Misbegotten, Electra, The Real Thing, Betrayal, Jumpers, The Glass Menagerie and Cyrano de Bergerac).

Producer Robert Fox told the Mail, “We’re not quite certain where it will start yet – it could be New York or it could be the West End. It’s down to theatre availability, and where Rachel wants to be. She travels a lot between New York and London, and where we stage it will be dependent on family and other commitments.”

Plenty, which originally premiered at the National’s Lyttelton Theatre in 1978, revolves around Susan Traherne (the role that Weisz would play), a former secret agent who worked behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied France during the Second World War, and the contrast with her present-day life as the depressed wife of a diplomat.

Kate Nelligan played the role originally, and reprised her performance in the 1983 Broadway transfer, for which she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. A 1985 film version of the play starred Meryl Streep. It has subsequently been revived in London with Cate Blanchett at the Albery (now the Noel Coward) in 1999, under the auspices of the Almeida Theatre.
